Accelerated Data Migration to AWS
Overview
At the early stages of a global pandemic, they engaged Improving to build an AWS cloud platform and securely migrate their data to AWS from a managed service provider.
The Challenge
COVID-19 emerged in early 2020, and telehealth services were leveraged to reduce stress on hospital systems. Overnight, telehealth web requests jumped from 5,000 per minute to 40,000 per minute. With Improving, Zipnosis was able to pivot to condense their AWS migration plan timeline from six to three months. They needed a platform architecture designed to satisfy HITRUST certification, HIPAA, and SOC2 compliance; and they needed to migrate their legacy database seamlessly under the downtime constraint of service level agreements (SLAs) across multiple web-facing applications.
The Solution
Platform Engineering: In order to build a modern, infrastructure as code, HIPAA compliant, and HITRUST certified environment, Improving built upon the AWS platform using Terraform and Elastic Kubernetes Service. Tools were created to roll out an Application Envelope using serverless components, creating a certified HIPAA environment that could be rolled out at the push of a button.
Database Migration: To efficiently migrate the data from the existing legacy cloud-hosted system to Amazon Aurora Postgres, Improving created a custom service. The data migration required a creative, secure, and encrypted streaming data solution that moved the data in two waves over a low bandwidth connection, ensuring compliance with SLAs.
The Business Benefits
Zipnosis now manages its platform in-house. Given that additional flexibility, scaling up and down is now easier and more cost-effective. Their infrastructure is secure, performant, and scalable, making their services more marketable to new customers. The modern technologies they’ve implemented, like Kubernetes on Amazon EKS, make recruiting top talent much easier. Zipnosis is well-positioned for continued growth.
