Conscious Capitalism is a transformative set of ideas that guides companies to operate ethically while also pursuing profit. It is a philosophy that Improving is very dedicated to as we strive to elevate and broaden the way traditional businesses operate.

The four pillars of Conscious Capitalism are Higher Purpose, Stakeholder Orientation, Conscious Leadership, and Conscious Culture. In this new blog series, we unravel the wisdom within these pillars and Conscious Capitalism as a whole and flip it on its head by looking at how we can use these traits in our personal lives to become better, more mindful people.

Conscious Capitalism Pillar #4: Conscious Leadership

As you might have guessed, Conscious Leadership revolves around individual leaders throughout the world. According to Conscious Capitalism’s website, Conscious Leaders understand and embrace the Higher Purpose of business and focus on creating value for and harmonizing the interests of the business stakeholders. They recognize the integral role of culture and purposefully cultivate Conscious Culture.”

This pillar unites all the others together, as you cannot be a Conscious Leader without understanding them. Conscious leadership serves as the conduit for manifesting our higher purpose into real actions. It prompts us to question: How do we lead towards our higher purpose?

First, it’s important to note that you are not immune to Conscious Leadership if you are not currently in a stereotypical leadership position. No matter where you are on the hierarchy of your organization or within your personal life, leadership is everyone’s responsibility. Even leadership, in my view, is also followership. In order to become a conscious leader, you have to be able to consciously follow individuals. And it really all starts with the pillars that we build Conscious Leadership: awareness, empowerment, and enablement.

Servant Leadership

As we discussed within the third installment of this series, conscious culture operates with intentionality, discipline, and deliberate practices, mirroring the essence of Conscious Leadership. Awareness is about figuring out your higher purpose, fostering interactions that align with it, and shaping a reality that resonates with your deepest values and aspirations.

Once you gain clarity on your higher purpose, you can integrate empowerment and enablement, which creates servant leadership. It's about nurturing and uplifting those around us and creating a stakeholder model where Conscious Leadership fosters growth and shared success.

Servant leadership represents only one facet of conscious leadership. The qualities of a conscious leader serve as a guide towards authentic leadership that transcends titles and hierarchies.

Remember, this is not about wielding authority, but about demonstrating empowerment and inclusivity for others. Whether you lead from the front or support from behind, conscious leadership asks us to embrace our innate ability to effect positive change.

Reflection is Key

Especially when integrating this pillar into your personal life, it’s imperative to reflect on your own leadership journey. How can you interact with others and make important decisions as a Conscious Leader? How can you lift up those around you? In what ways can you create an inclusive environment through your leadership abilities?

While not everyone has the opportunity to lead in the same way, you can always demonstrate followership and learn what makes a Conscious Leader in your eyes. This will provide you an enormous advantage when you do find yourself in a leadership position in the future.

I appreciate you joining me on this journey towards an authentically conscious life! Want to learn more about Conscious Capitalism and how you can integrate it into your life or work? Contact us here.
