Growth through collaboration...the Calgarian way

Community & Culture

Calgary is well known for its entrepreneurial spirit, its trailblazers and innovators, its unhindered ability to find and nourish opportunity. What may go unnoticed at times is the unwavering support and collaboration of great minds to collectively find success.

Improving, a full IT services consulting company has operated in the Calgary area for over 25 years, but it is only in the last few that the company has seen tremendous growth. A large part of their success can be attributed to the supportive nature of Calgary’s local community. While Calgarians take pride in their entrepreneurial leadership, they also actively support and celebrate each other's successes. Improving’s team is no different. We have continuously built success through the relationships we’ve created and continue to nurture with community partners and businesses, including local user groups such as Women in Data; non-profits such as Chic Geek and Plastic-Free YYC; and partnerships with the IIBA Calgary Chapter.  “Being involved in the cities we work and live in is at the heart of Improving’s guiding principles. As active members of the conscious business community, we strive to support and integrate within our local communities. As a result, I am thrilled to see our employees proactively striving to have a positive impact in Calgary,” shared Curtis Hite, CEO of Improving.

Improving, like most businesses in Calgary, has had to rise above the challenges of the past year, and despite some very impressive setbacks, the team has more than doubled since last May. Improving has also hit several milestones recently but being able to expand their team has been the highlight. Hiring highly skilled tech professionals in Alberta, as well as across Canada. The team has recently expanded into Toronto and Improving is discovering more and more recruiting possibilities across the country.

It is a common theme here in Calgary: the increasing demand for digital transformation across all industries and an increasing need for skilled tech professionals is fostering good news stories throughout Calgary. Examples include:

  • At the end of 2020, according to Stats Can – Talent availability in Calgary ranks 5/20 in Canada’s top tech cities and leads the ranking of Tech Talent Labour pools as the top mid-sized market. 1
  • As of April, Alberta has seen the number of tech companies more than double in the past three years. 2
  • Alberta’s spending on digital transformation is set to surpass $20 billion between 2021-2024. 3

In this economic landscape, success is contagious and the buzz about Calgary’s tech industry is spreading. This increased buzz can be attributed back to that collaborative mentality of Calgarians and initiatives that demonstrate it such as the Calgary Economic Development’s Team Calgary program.

In addition to being part of Team Calgary, Improving has always believed in an integrated approach to developing its business. With a keen focus on supporting the local business community, we have partnered up with two other growing Canadian companies to build our new office space. Working with both CBRE and Epic Investment Services to develop a new space for their growing team; a dedicated space for people to connect and come together (when it’s safe to do so of course).

“I am thrilled to see our Calgary team thriving in the energy that the city has”, explains Michael McCullough, President of the Calgary Enterprise. “Collaboration has always been the key to success for our team. Whether it’s working with vendors and business partners, engaging with local community groups, or exchanging resources with our other offices across North America.”

As the teams at Improving, CBRE, and Epic work together to build this new office, they are all excited with the notion that this office build signifies more than just the development of a workspace. It signifies growth in our city, the potential for more jobs for Calgarians and the exhilaration of Albertan’s diversifying economy. There’s a saying that “competition makes us faster, but collaboration makes us better” and Calgary’s business community is a perfect example of just that. It is no wonder we are seeing incredible growth within the tech industry here in the YYC.
